Unified Cohesive Zone Model (UCZM)
PCDC introduces a innovative Unified Cohesive Zone Model (UCZM) for fracture and fragmentation simulation. Unlike traditional CZMs, UCZM dynamically inserts cohesive zone elements based on real-time material states (e.g., stress and strain), eliminating time-discontinuity problems ( Papoulia et al., 2003). The novel algorithm developed by Lei (2024) allows precise control of the transition from continuum to discontinuum, enables any material model—elastic, plastic, or damage-based—to work seamlessly with discrete fracture mechanics.

High-Precision Smooth Contact Algorithm
PCDC implements a GPU-optimized smooth contact model based on the potential distance method (Lei et al., 2020). This approach outperforms traditional contact algorithms in both accuracy and stability, especially in HFDEM modelling.
It accurately handles contact behaviors such as:
- Tensile separation
- Frictional sliding and dilation
- Residual strength and residual tension
By modeling contact forces using negative potential distances, PCDC achieves accurate simulation of contact mechanics in both static and dynamic regimes.

Thanks to its built-in open architecture, user-defined models can be developed and deployed without external tools, and executed as GPU-accelerated modules directly within the GUI. This enables advanced users and researchers to rapidly prototype and deploy novel models with full parallel performance.
